Alexander Technique

I see the Alexander Technique as an effective, exciting, reliable framework for change, that has the potential to enable each individual to become more fully themselves. I see my role as an Alexander Teacher more as being an enabler, a guide and a witness to the changes that each person has the potential to make.

Flying the Training-Course Nest

A course for final-term Alexander students, post-graduates and teachers wanting support or supervision for their teaching.

Flying the training course nest' can be a lonely and challenging experience. After three years of input and sheltered teaching, a new graduate is 'overnight' expected to be able to 'go out there and get on with it'! When faced with teaching 'out there in the real world' new questions arise: 'Why can't I move this pupil's leg?' (I could always move other student's legs on the training course), 'How much should I tell my pupils?' (I never had to talk much on my training as we all knew what to do). 'What do I do with my new pupil who has a frozen shoulder?' etc Yet at this important time a new teacher is often alone with their questions.

Personally I struggled with this transition for a long time. I felt insecure about my teaching, frequently learning by 'trial and error', and I longed for feedback and support from a mentor figure. Now, years on, I feel there are many long-term rewards to be gained in one's practice through making a more supported transition into teaching. Having a regular time for support, reflection, feedback, questions and generally being able to draw upon the experience and skills of a teacher who has been through this transition process could be incredibly helpful, and, with luck, encourage a new strength, assurance and confidence in the process of teaching.

This group meets approx. every 6 weeks, for a day, and telephone support is offered in-between these days, as needed. Half the day provides a space for questions about teaching; individuals discussing case-studies; sharing challenges, and generally looking at how to best manage the process of teaching, whilst honouring the individual's training, style of teaching and belief system. This space addresses both the complexities of all involved with teaching, and also the 'background mechanics' e.g. the implications involved in where to teach; of when to take payment, deal with cancellations etc

The second half of the day is a time for additional input that perhaps wasn't covered whilst training, or that needs refreshing: e.g. working with the Dart procedures; the anatomy of Alexander's directions; application work, procedures for specific conditions etc. This work would be in response to whatever the group felt would be most useful.

This group is held at my house in Forest Row (30 miles south of London).
